As the TMMOB Chamber of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, we are launching the “Through the Straits” International Photography Contest with the aim of making visible, through the art of photography, the strategic importance of all straits in international waters from a maritime perspective, the technical reality of naval architecture and marine engineering, and the strong relationship between the sea and the city. The contest, which is intended to become an annual tradition, will bring together not only aesthetically powerful photographs, but also works that provide an accurate and effective narrative from the perspectives of maritime affairs and naval architecture. Different types and sizes of ships passing through the Straits, their interaction with the city, night passages, and technical details will be documented through photographers’ lenses. The works will be evaluated by a jury planned to consist of photographers, naval architects, pilot captains, and academics, with the aim of creating a visual maritime memory of the Straits spanning many years. It is intended that the awarded works and works accepted will be presented to wider audiences not only at the exhibition in Istanbul, but also at universities, maritime fairs, shipyards, museums, outdoor venues, and digital platforms.
